Carrerlamar beach.
LIFEGUARDS at Carrerlamar beach in Campello found the remains of a dolphin pup on the shore.
Owing to its deteriorated state it was impossible to carry out the usual type of examination in these circumstances, a town hall spokesman explained.
Campello’s Institute of Coastal Ecology said the following day that it was unaware that a dolphin had been discovered on the beach. Institute sources added that this was not unusual as dolphins habitually approach the coast. Far more dead dolphins washed up in the area during the 1990s than at present, he added, owing to a virus that affected the species at the time.
Dolphins have regularly been spotted off Campello in recent years, the Institute sources explained, although the fact that they approached the coast did not mean that they were diseased.
The dead dolphin pup on Carrerlamar had probably died out to sea and was brought ashore by currents, the Institute said.
