Terrace collapse in Denia Credit: Google Maps
NEIGHBOURS in the centre of Denia were woken at 2am on Friday morning by a tremendous crash caused by a first floor terrace completely collapsing into two shops on the Passeig del Saladar.
Four vehicles and eight troops from the Denia fire brigade were dispatched to the scene along with the local police to attempt to clean up the wreckage. Fortunately nobody was injured in the collapse but the elderly homeowner of the apartment was treated for anxiety and shock at the scene by paramedics. Six people were immediately evacuated whilst the emergency services surveyed the damage.
It is unclear what caused the terrace to collapse as there was nothing heavy outside and experts and municipal architects will now conduct an inspection on the building and the adjacent terraces.
The building is 30-years-old meaning that general wear and tear is unlikely the cause and the integrity of the building needs to be checked before the residents that were evacuated can return to their homes. The clean-up operation continued the following day and the owners were able to enter to retrieve some belongings.
