SIXTEEN immigrants went on the run from the Centre for the Internment of Foreigners (CIE) in Hoya Fría, Tenerife.

They were part of an attempted escape by 24 people who had gathered in the courtyard of the compound, according to police.

According to the first information, the escape took place at 9am on Saturday in the morning and was due to a mutiny. The police have arrested seven of the people who had fled, according to ‘Efe’.

According to the local newspaper ‘El Día.es’, which has contacted the National Police, it claims that this is not a riot, but an attempt to escape during a transfer. He also assures that the majority of the immigrants are of Saharawi origin. There is still no official communiqué on how many immigrantshave fled and which of them have been detained.

The National Police, which has not reported this incident despite having announced that it would issue a statement detailing the details of this incident, has asked for the cooperation of the localpolice of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and LaLaguna. However, it should be mentioned that the immigrants in the CIE are not held for any criminal offence, but for having committed an administrative offence by entering the country without documentation.
