Need for special needs AN Alfaz school has been waiting since September for a special needs teacher. The parents of seven pupils affected by the delay said they deliberately chose the Veles e Vents school because they had been informed that there would be a specialist teacher available for their children throughout the 2019-2020 academic year. One family explained that they were particularly concerned because their child needs constant supervision during meals, as his condition means that he is liable to choke while eating. Other parents with children at the school claimed that they are also adversely affected by the situation. “The teachers have to attend to the special needs pupils and pay less attention to own children and their daily activities,” they said. Veles e Vents sources quoted in the local Spanish media explained that the regional Education Department has approved and appointed a special needs teacher, whose arrival is imminent. Meanwhile the school’s pupil-teacher ratio is within the established requirements, although the same sources admitted that teachers were sometimes overstretched.
