THE Balearic Blood and Tissue Bank (BSTIB) have appealed for urgent help over the festive season, where at least 1,000 donations are needed to guarantee transfusions for hospital patients. With many residents away for Christmas and New Year, representatives of the BSTIB have forecasted that there will be a drop in donations. Addressing the crisis, a spokesman said: “blood is desperately needed for cancer patients, those with chronic diseases, anyone who is involved in an accident, or for complicated deliveries during childbirth.” In order to give blood, donors must weigh more than 50 kilos, be between 18 and 65-years-old and be in good health, where men can donate up to 4 times a year and 3 times for women. In Palma de Mallorca, Spain, regular and new donors can give blood between Monday and Saturday, excluding public holidays, from 8am to 8.30pm at the blood banks located on Carrer de Rosselló and Carrer de Cazador. There will also be a number of other donation points across Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. More information can be found at: www.donasang.org.
