THE venues for this year’s provincial mountain race cups have been revealed.
The 2020 ‘Copa de Carreras por Montaña’ and the ‘Copa de Travesias Populares’ will be staged in Lucainena de las Torres, Seron, Gador, Alhama de Almeria, Sierro, Gergal, Canjayar, Macael, Tahal and Dalias.
The first events in what will be the fourth year of the cups will be on Saturday March 15 in Seron and in Lucainena, and the competitions will wind up on November 8 in the Gador sierra.
Last year more than 2,600 people took part in the races, which are promoted by the Diputacion de Almeria’s Sports department in collaboration with the Andalucia Mountaineering Federation.
Speaking at this week’s presentation of the cups, provincial Sports deputy Maria Luisa Cruz commented that the events give the runners “the opportunity to enjoy open-air sport in the province’s spectacular natural landscapes.”
The deputy also said the Diputacion is keen to see this kind of mountaineering help get all ages interested in sport. She also pointed out that the events serve as an opportunity for local councils to offer interesting activities to local residents and to visitors who come to the province looking for outdoor pursuits.
Andalucia Mountaineering Federation President Emilio Martinez said the competitions attract increasingly more interest every year and a growing number of municipalities wanting to host the events.
He thanked the provincial government and the participating local authorities for their support, and for helping to make mountaineering an increasingly more popular pastime in Almeria.
