NOTTINGHAM could be forced to enter Tier 3 lockdown ‘within days’ as talks continue between local leaders and government.
Talks are being held between Health Minister Nadine Dorries, MPs and local councillors throughout Friday, October 23. Discussions have reached a level of urgency as hospital chiefs have now had to cancel non-urgent surgeries as the numbers of infected patients rises by almost a whole ward a day.
Following discussions Friday morning, one MP in the meeting told the Mirror “it’s pretty clear they think we need to go into Tier 3”, but “there’s still a live discussion” about where exactly might have it imposed.
Nottingham currently has the second-highest rate of cases in the country, and MPs expect the formal move to Tier 3 to come sometime next week.
If Nottingham does enter Tier 3, it will make it England’s fifth region to enter the harshest restrictions after Liverpool City Region, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.
Nottinghamshire is one of four regions in England in talks to enter Tier 3, along with West Yorkshire, Warrington and the North East – including both Tyneside and the Tees Valley.
