Winter Storm Enzo: Adverse weather disrupting flights in the US

Winter Storm Enzo has brought rare snow and ice to the United States, disrupting travel and daily life in areas not accustomed to such extreme winter conditions.

Major cities including Houston, New Orleans, and Atlanta are under winter storm alerts as hazardous weather grips the Gulf Coast and beyond.

According to The Weather Channel, snow and ice began developing across Texas and Louisiana on Monday night (January 20) and are expected to move eastward through the week. Cities such as Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi have already experienced snow and icy conditions, which are expected to worsen by Tuesday. Areas along and south of Interstate 10 are particularly vulnerable, with freezing rain and sleet threatening to create hazardous travel conditions.

USA Today reports that both George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports in Houston plan to be temporarily closed from Tuesday January 21st as snow accumulation and icy roads will make travel too dangerous. Airport authorities stated, “While there will be no departing or arriving flights, our dedicated teams will remain on-site 24-7, working diligently to prepare for a swift and safe return to normal operations when weather permits.”

Airline disruptions in the US due to Storm Enzo

As reported by Travel and Tour World, over 2,000 flights have been cancelled or delayed due to Winter Storm Enzo. Major carriers including United Airlines, JetBlue, Delta, and Emirates are struggling to maintain schedules. Newark Liberty, LaGuardia, JFK, and Boston Logan International Airports are among the hardest hit, with United Airlines and JetBlue reporting the highest number of cancellations.

Flight cancellations and delays are expected to increase as the storm moves eastward across the south. Travellers have been advised to monitor airline updates and allow extra time for journeys.

The Weather Channel forecasts that moderate to major impacts will be felt across the Gulf Coast, including snow and ice accumulation from Texas to the Carolinas. Snowfall totals may reach up to six inches in some areas, with higher amounts in isolated bands.
