UPDATES on Storm Herminia: Widespread havoc across the UK and Spain

Storm Herminia continues to bring its wrath with destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and disruption affecting regions from the UK to Spain.

As recovery efforts progress, authorities brace for more challenges, including yet another storm forecasted later this week. What is going on?

Storm Herminia’s impact in the UK: Loss of life

The UK has been lashed by Storm Herminia, with wind speeds reaching up to 83 mph in the southeast. The Met Office issued extensive weather warnings for England and Wales, highlighting risks of power cuts, travel delays, and potential flooding. Over 50 flood warnings and 172 flood alerts were activated, particularly in the southwest, where rainfall is expected to reach up to 80mm, according to a report by The Independent.

Travel has been severely disrupted, with British Airways cancelling 26 flights to and from London Heathrow, affecting an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 passengers. The cancellations primarily affected short-haul domestic and European routes.

A 19-year-old man has died after his car was struck by a falling tree in Mauchline, East Ayrshire. The storm comes just two days after Storm Eowyn, which brought record-breaking wind speeds of 100 mph and sadly claimed the life of 20-year-old Kacper Dudek in County Donegal, Ireland, when a tree fell on his car.

Spain: Severe weather alerts in place due to Storm Herminia

Spain has also faced significant challenges, with AEMET issuing warnings for intense winds, heavy rain, and snowfall across the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Galicia, one of the hardest-hit regions, recorded gusts of up to 162 km/h and rainfall exceeding 120 mm, prompting emergency measures such as INUNGAL (the Special Civil Protection Plan for flood risk. Coastal zones in Galicia, especially the northwest of A Coruña, are under extreme risk alerts, with waves reaching heights of 8–12 metres and strong winds exceeding 70 per cent probability of occurrence. Similar conditions are expected in the Rias Baixas and Minho areas of Pontevedra, posing a high danger to coastal infrastructures and activities.

In Alicante, a yellow alert remains in place as the province battles waves of up to 4 metres and strong winds. The coastal regions have been particularly vulnerable, and AEMET has warned of another storm later this week, creating uncertainty and panic.

Significant wind risks have been forecast for several inland areas, including Teruel, Albacete, and Valencia, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/h, particularly in mountainous regions. The Almanzora Valley in Almería and Murcia are also bracing for southwest winds of up to 90 km/h, impacting transportation and safety.

Rainfall warnings have been issued for Huesca and Lleida in the Pyrenees, where accumulations of up to 60 mm in 12 hours are expected. Heavy snowfall is anticipated across León, Lugo, Ourense, and other mountainous regions, with accumulations of up to 10 cm above 1,000 metres, severely disrupting travel and daily activities.
