Tivoli reborn: Rebuild of iconic park prioritised

The iconic Tivoli amusement park in Benalmádena is back and set to reopen with a modern, ambitious project backed by a €100 to €200 million investment. 

Benalmadena Council has confirmed the new park will span almost 70,000 square metres, far larger than its predecessor. This includes 35,860 square metres on a standalone plot and 34,000 square metres for a retail area.

Acting mayor and Urban Planning councillor Presi Aguilera, stepping in while Juan Antonio Lara is on medical leave, announced the park’s building capacity will nearly triple, rising from 16,672 to 42,220 square metres. Following years of legal disputes, the agreement reached between the amusement park’s owners and Benalmadena Council marks a fresh start and a cause for celebration for those campaigners, local residents, and job prospects in the town.

Council to prioritise construction of Tivoli over other local projects

The new deal now prioritises the Tivoli park over other adjacent development projects so to expedite its completion. Aguilera urged opposition parties not to mislead residents, emphasising that the plan “protects, modernises, and expands” Tivoli while addressing concerns of the former  workers who campaigned so hard for its reopening.

The next step involves approving an urban planning agreement in a municipal plenary session to amend Benalmádena’s current one. When approved, the park’s owners have three months to submit their final project, with construction expected to take three to four years. Aguilera vowed to expedite all process, calling for political unity to support the scheme. 

She went on to stress that the agreement was a triumph of months of effort, reigniting stalled negotiations and a prior ruling against the land’s protection from a previous administration that lacked dialogue. The reopening promises economic growth, jobs, and a revitalised cultural landmark for the Costa del Sol.
