Fuengirola to fill with horses

The eighth year of Fuengirola’s ‘A Caballo’ equestrian day is set to gallop into the town centre on Sunday, September 20, to offer a full afternoon of horse-drawn spectacles, competitions, and parades from noon until 10pm.

The event will take place across key central venues, including Plaza de la Constitución, the surrounding area of Plaza Reyes Catolicos, and Avenida Condes de San Isidro. Highlights will include thrilling equestrian shows, a costume and harness competition, an Amazons’ parade, the 47th Exhibition of Carriages, and the second International Traditional Harness Competition in memory of Jose Luis Martin Lorca.

Organised by the local Hípico Committee volunteers, the day celebrates Fuengirola’s deep-rooted passion for all things equine. “A Caballo continues to solidify its place in Fuengirola,” said Hugo Ruiz, president of the Peña Caballista. “It’s becoming a characteristic of our town, with years of dedication behind it. This marks the 47th edition of the Carriage Exhibition, the second oldest in Andalucia after Jerez. This year, we’re taking a big leap by making it international.”

The carriage competition will feature international judges and confirmed entries from Portugal, the Netherlands, and Chile. Ruiz said the event’s goal is to preserve traditions and keep horses at the heart of Fuengirola’s identity.

Starting at noon, the carriages will parade through the city’s iconic landmarks, including the Paseo Maritimo, in a visually stunning route. A fresh twist this year: the manoeuvrability test will take place in the bullring, adding some extra flair to the proceedings.

The equestrian exhibitions are coordinated by Centro Hipico Dana and Centro de Equitacion El Ranchito.
