London’s Christmas lights 2025: When the magic switch flips across the city

There’s a chill in the air, coffee shops are swapping iced drinks for cinnamon lattes, and shop windows are already teasing their festive displays – which can only mean one thing: Christmas is coming to London.

And with fewer than ten weekends to go before the big day, the capital is about to burst into light. From Oxford Street’s iconic stars to the glowing gardens of Kew, the city is preparing for another spectacular season of switch-ons that turn even the grumpiest commuter into a wide-eyed spectator.

Here’s your complete guide to when and where London will light up for Christmas 2025 – and trust us, you’ll want to mark these dates in your calendar.

Oxford Street: Where the sparkle begins

As always, the heart of London’s Christmas lights beats first along Oxford Street. The famous shopping boulevard – the longest in Europe – will dazzle with 5,000 glowing stars made up of more than 300,000 LED bulbs.

But it’s not just about twinkling lights. The display once again partners with the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH), helping raise funds for children in need. So while shoppers enjoy the glittering glow, they’ll also be helping to make a difference.

Oxford Street will be the first major display to light up this year, with the grand switch-on taking place on Monday, November 3. That’s when Christmas truly begins in the capital.

Just a few days later, the glow spreads to Regent Street and St James’s, where one of London’s most beloved traditions returns: the “Spirits of Christmas” installation. These thirty elegant winged angels will hover gracefully above Regent Street, Piccadilly, and Jermyn Street, bathing the West End in golden light.

A Wishing Tree at St James’s Market will also raise funds for The Felix Project, a London charity tackling food poverty. The lights go on from Thursday, November 6 – expect crowds, carols, and plenty of holiday spirit.

Carnaby Street and Covent Garden bring the festive flair

When it comes to creative displays, Carnaby Street never disappoints. Each year, the Soho hotspot reinvents itself with bold, eye-catching designs – and 2025’s theme, ‘All is Bright,’ promises to be a celebration of joy, optimism, and pure festive energy.

The lights here are part of a five-year artistic installation launched in 2024, and they’ll flicker on the same evening as Regent Street – Thursday, November 6. Think neon hues, music, and a buzz that perfectly captures Soho’s lively personality.

Over in Covent Garden, things get classic – and absolutely magical. The historic market and Piazza will glow under a canopy of 300,000 twinkling lights from Wednesday, November 12. It’s one of London’s most romantic Christmas spots, especially when paired with a steaming cup of mulled wine or a visit to the festive cocktail bar Miracle at Henrietta, which returns once again this year.

Not far away, Marylebone Village will celebrate its switch-on the same night, Wednesday, November 12, turning its charming high street into a winter festival. The road will be closed to traffic for the occasion, with live music, school choirs, and street food stalls adding to the warm community vibe.

This year’s event will also support The Marylebone Project, a charity helping homeless women across London – proving that even the city’s chicest neighbourhoods know how to give back during the holidays.

Leadenhall, Kew and Winter Wonderland close the festive circuit

If you’re after that old-fashioned Dickensian charm, Leadenhall Market is your go-to. Its Victorian architecture practically begs for a Christmas makeover, and this year it’ll shine brighter than ever when the lights go on Thursday, November 13.

The covered arcade will also host a series of Christmas markets, including the SoLo Craft Fair on November 16 and December 7, and the Vintage Furniture and Flea Market on November 24. Perfect for anyone hunting for unique handmade gifts – or just an excuse for a festive wander under the twinkling ceiling.

And then, of course, comes Christmas at Kew, perhaps the most magical of them all. From Friday, November 14, the world-famous gardens will transform into a glowing fairy-tale forest. This year, there’ll be eight brand-new light installations, including a never-before-seen transformation of the Great Pagoda, which will get its very first Christmas makeover.

Expect dazzling reflections on the lakes, tunnels of light, and the soft soundtrack of festive music echoing through the trees – it’s one of those London experiences that feels truly otherworldly.

The same night, Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland will switch on its lights, officially kicking off London’s biggest Christmas event. This year’s new attraction, ‘Luminarie Lane,’ promises to be a glowing marketplace filled with photo ops, festive treats, and a healthy dose of sparkle.

A city glowing with Christmas cheer

From the West End’s glittering angels to Kew’s illuminated gardens, London’s Christmas lights are more than decorations — they’re the heartbeat of the season. They bring the city together, spark joy in gloomy weather, and remind everyone that there’s still magic to be found in the everyday.

So whether you will be there for the shopping, the selfies, or simply to soak in the atmosphere, grab your scarf, head into town, and watch London shine brighter than ever this Christmas.
