IN JANUARY, Santa Pola is introducing a creative and exciting new way to experience one of its most crucial historical events, inspiring residents and newcomers to engage in a uniquely immersive and fascinating attraction. The Gamified Virtual Reality Castle Fortress will take visitors through a journey to October 3, 1609, when the Moriscos were expelled from Santa Pola, as well as Elche and Crevillente.
VR technology brings important Santa Pola history to life
Using virtual reality technology, the attraction places visitors in the heart of the action in a historical setting, allowing them to witness various scenarios of daily life in Santa Pola during the early 17th century. One of the main highlights to witness during the event was the expulsion of the Moriscos (Muslims in Spain who were forced to convert to Christianity), an event of profound historical importance for Santa Pola, which served as the main embarkation port for the area.
With a mixture of educational historical programming and interactive gameplay, residents will be able to move through reconstructed spaces within the castle fortress, and experience an iconic landmark of Santa Pola in a completely new light, exploring, making choices, and interacting with a long-gone world.
The expulsion of the Moriscos: an event that shaped Santa Pola’s current landscape
For Santa Pola, the event was an economic and demographic turning point, as it was an important historical location for the Moriscos from nearby areas including Elche and Crevillente. The expulsion reshaped local society, having long-lasting effects on agriculture, trade, and the population in the region, and is looked upon today as one of the fundamental events in the town’s history.
The attraction will be available every Thursday (except holidays) from the beginning of January to May 2026, with 5 sessions per day, each lasting 30 minutes. The Gamified Virtual Reality Castle Fortress is recommended for any history buff or curious newcomer over the age of 12, and families are encouraged to visit. Interested visitors can make their reservations at the Maritime Museum by phoning T. 965 41 62 23.
