El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has wrapped up another hugely successful edition of its much-loved Mitjafava Fest, with hundreds of residents and visitors coming together to celebrate the town’s most emblematic crop: the “fava poblera.”

Over several days, the festival transformed the municipality into a vibrant hub of gastronomy, culture and community spirit, reinforcing the bean’s status as both a culinary staple and a symbol of local identity.

A festival blending food, culture and community

The 2026 edition delivered a packed programme that combined traditional roots with modern creativity. Festivities began midweek with educational and cultural initiatives, including the presentation of a children’s book promoting healthy eating, alongside the launch of a themed mobile game and an ethnological exhibition exploring local trades.

As the week progressed, food took centre stage. A wine tasting hosted by local agricultural associations highlighted regional produce, while a live showcooking session saw chefs reinterpret the fava poblera in contemporary dishes, offering free tastings to attendees.

Saturday brought a deeper connection to the land, with visitors exploring experimental crop fields before enjoying traditional dances, music and family-friendly activities. The atmosphere blended heritage with celebration, culminating in an evening of live performances and communal festivities.

Tapifava finale showcases culinary creativity

The festival reached its peak on Sunday with the popular Tapifava event, where local bars and restaurants showcased inventive small plates centred around the humble bean. The response was overwhelming, with crowds turning out in force and many stalls selling out completely.

Competitions added a playful edge, including awards for the longest bean and the variety with the most seeds, alongside a local wine contest celebrating regional craftsmanship.

A collective effort that keeps tradition alive

Organisers highlighted the collaborative spirit behind the event, crediting local businesses, agricultural groups, municipal staff and residents for its continued success. This collective effort has helped transform Mitjafava Fest into a defining annual celebration that preserves and promotes Benitatxell’s agricultural heritage.

More than just a festival, the event underscores the enduring importance of the fava poblera – not only as a product, but as a cultural thread that connects generations and sustains the identity of the town.
