The province of Alicante is expecting an 87 per cent occupancy rate in hotels and flats for the Puente de Mayo, or May Day bank holiday weekend. The figures were reported by the Provincial Association of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation of Alicante, which described the outlook as “very positive” for the region as a whole in a statement.

Alicante, at near-full capacity for the May Day long weekend

To be exact, the 87 per cent figure is the average across the province of Alicante, but in the capital, the figures are even more impressive. The city of Alicante has reached a 95.22 per cent occupancy for the weekend, whereas the Playa de San Juan area, one of the most iconic areas on the Costa Blanca South, is practically at full capacity with a jaw-dropping 99.57 per cent occupancy.

These factors are heavily driven by the great weather, the wide array of leisure activities available in the area, and fun-filled events scheduled over this long weekend. Additionally, sectors like hospitality, retail, and services will receive a significant boost from the increase of visitors to the shining Costa.

The May Day long weekend is one of the first major touristic events of the annual calendar in the province, and will set the tone for the bustling and vibrant peak season in the Costa Blanca hub.

Surpassing records: The Alicante airport to be booked and busy this peak season

To prepare for the arrival of peak season, officials from the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport have introduced a new fast-track check-in system, designed to reduce waiting times by giving travellers access to a dedicated baggage drop off lane. This is being implemented following a record-breaking February for foot traffic at the major Spanish airport.

The figures consolidate the province of Alicante as a top tourism destination along the Costa Blanca; the demand head of peak season reinforces the destination’s appeal, and increasing foot traffic at the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport only confirms what residents and visitors already know: when it comes to sunny beaches, delicious gastronomy, and fascinating culture in Spain, Alicante is hard to beat.
