Passengers flying from Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport could soon skip one of the most frustrating parts of travel, with a new fast track check-in system expected to launch before the busy summer season.
The service is designed to reduce waiting times by giving travellers access to a dedicated baggage drop off lane, allowing them to avoid standard queues. For holidaymakers heading through one of Spain’s busiest tourist airports, especially during peak summer weeks, that could be a welcome change.
Airport operator Aena is reportedly aiming for a June launch, just as passenger numbers begin to surge.
For many Costa Blanca travellers, the timing is unlikely to be a coincidence.
What the new Alicante Airport fast track service includes
The upcoming system will offer passengers a quicker route through check-in if they need to drop luggage before flying.
Instead of joining the regular baggage queue, eligible users would be able to use a separate priority lane close to the main check-in desks.
That means less waiting and a smoother start to the journey, particularly for those arriving later than planned or travelling with children, luggage or tight schedules.
The service is expected to come with a small extra charge, although pricing has not yet been confirmed.
Travellers should be able to book it in advance through participating airlines or arrange access on arrival at the airport, depending on final operating rules.
For many passengers, paying a modest fee to save time may prove attractive during the summer getaway rush.
Why Alicante Airport is adding it now
Alicante-Elche Airport is one of the key gateways to the Costa Blanca, serving huge numbers of international passengers every year, particularly from the UK and northern Europe.
Summer queues are not unusual, especially on weekends and during school holiday periods.
Although Aena says waiting times at Alicante are generally manageable, demand rises sharply in peak departure windows. A fast track baggage service offers a practical way to ease pressure while improving the passenger experience.
It also brings Alicante into line with other major Spanish airports where similar systems are already operating.
Fast track check-in services are already available in airports including:
Madrid-Barajas
Barcelona-El Prat
Palma de Mallorca
Málaga-Costa del Sol
Adding Alicante to that list reflects the airport’s growing importance within Spain’s tourism network.
What it means for Costa Blanca holidaymakers
For residents, second home owners and tourists flying in and out of Alicante, the service may be particularly useful during the busiest months.
Anyone travelling with hold luggage knows that security is not always the only queue. Check-in lines can be just as time consuming, especially when multiple flights depart close together.
A quicker bag drop option could help passengers reach security faster, spend less time standing in line and more time relaxing before departure.
Families with young children, elderly travellers and people arriving by coach or transfer at fixed times may benefit most.
Business travellers using Alicante for short trips may also welcome anything that makes departures quicker and more predictable.
Where the new fast track area will be
Preparations for the dedicated zone are expected to begin between late April and early May. The new facility is set to be located near the main check-in counters and clearly signposted, making it easy for passengers to find.
That matters in a busy airport setting, where unclear systems can create more stress rather than less. A straightforward layout and visible signs will be key if the service is to run smoothly during peak season.
Could more paid airport extras follow
Across Europe, airports are increasingly offering optional paid services aimed at speed and convenience.
Priority security, premium lounges, reserved parking and fast boarding are already familiar to many travellers. Priority baggage drop is a natural extension of that trend.
For some passengers, these extras are unnecessary. For others, especially during summer chaos, they can feel worth every euro.
Alicante’s move suggests airports are continuing to look for ways to manage heavy passenger flows while also generating additional revenue.
What travellers should do now
If you are flying from Alicante this summer, it may be worth checking with your airline closer to departure to see whether the new service is available and what it costs.
Those travelling in July or August, when queues can build quickly, may find it especially useful. Even passengers who do not use it could still benefit indirectly if part of the demand shifts into a separate lane.
That could mean shorter standard queues for everyone else. For now, one thing is clear. Alicante Airport wants passengers moving faster before the summer crowds arrive.
