Everyone in Mijas can enjoy a classic coastal celebration this May Day, as the local council and community leaders are planning to distribute more than 600 kilograms of freshly grilled sardines at the Torreón square in La Cala de Mijas on Friday, May 1. The event starts at noon with skilled local grill masters preparing the fish right on the beach.
Tradition rooted in community spirit
Ana Mata, mayor of Mijas, presented details of a gathering on Monday, April 27 to announce that local espeteros will be handling the sardine grilling under a large marquee set up for the occasion. The neighbourhood association from Puerto de los Gatos will run the bar, adding a strong community touch.
The event is described as far more than a simple meal. It brings people together to celebrate the new season, reconnect, raise glasses to shared customs, and proudly present local flavours to everyone who attends. Many consider this annual fixture part of Mijas history and a key expression of local identity.
Live music completes the May Day programme
After the main mouth-watering distribution at midday, entertainment continues from 3.30pm. Groups Los Zayas and Kalima will perform, turning the square into a lively setting for the afternoon. Those in La Cala can look forward to a full programme that mixes food, music and social connection on International Workers’ Day.
Practical information for visitors
Plaza del Torreón in La Cala de Mijas serves as the central venue. Free sardines will go to all who attend while stocks last, so early arrival will help guarantee a portion. The beach location offers easy access and a relaxed atmosphere typical of Costa del Sol events. Families, locals and tourists regularly join this long-standing appointment each year. Remember that parking will be limited on the coast side of the A-7, so the earlier the better for finding a spot to park.
This free public gathering provides an accessible way to experience authentic Costa del Sol food culture without cost. Mijas continues to maintain such traditions that draw crowds and strengthen social bonds. Anyone planning a spring break in southern Spain may wish to include this date in their itinerary for a genuine taste of local life.
