The Region of Murcia recently celebrated the successful closure of the Camino de la Cruz Caravaca Cycling Route, the very first edition of this exciting sports event. The cycling route not only traversed through multiple idyllic areas along the Costa Calida and part of the Costa Blanca, the event also received a healthy outpouring of support for its solidarity efforts, making donations to local charities in Murcia.

Two days of cycling and more than 115 kilometres

The second stage of the route began in the early morning from Mula and headed towards Caravaca de la Cruz, serving as the final point of the 116-kilometre route that follows the iconic and historic path of the Camino de Levante.

The sporting event concluded at the Royal Basilica-Sanctuary of the Vera Cruz after the athletes spent two days cycling in an initiative that combined sport, culture, and camaraderie among supporters in the Region of Murcia and beyond. The athletes were met with an atmosphere of overwhelming excitement and support after completing the route. Upon arrival at the basilica, a religious ceremony took place and the athletes were awarded with pilgrimage certificates.

A community meal and charitable donations to kind volunteers in the Region of Murcia

Afterward, the day concluded with a lunch, wherein all the participants, families, and onlookers shared a meal together and during which all the donations to the charities were collected and presented. The benefiting charities included the Association of Families of Children with Cancer of the Region of Murcia, or AFACMUR, and the Justinian Mothers, who carry out social work in the Region.

As a whole, the very first edition of the Camino de la Cruz de Caravaca Cycling Route was a booming success, and counted on the participation of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, various Town Councils of Murcia, Orihuela, Mula and Caravaca and the Camino de la Cruz de Caravaca Foundation, among other individuals and organisations. Organisers of the event aim for it to become a benchmark attraction on Murcia’s annual sports calendar, with the growing participation of local athletes each year.
