Motorists heading up and down the Benalmadena coast must adapt to traffic changes immediately. A new layout near Bil Bil Castle, has been put in place to facilitate the ‘Autovia del Agua’ or ‘Water highway’ project, a critical infrastructure upgrade for the area. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, aware and avoid relying on familiar driving habits during this period.
Essential changes to traffic flow
Congestion is expected between the Los Maite roundabout and El Bil Bil Castle due to a new lane splitting system. Vehicles travelling towards Torremolinos and Fuengirola now share a single dual-carriageway. Previously, these lanes served only one-way traffic towards Fuengirola, but they have now been converted to accommodate two-way movement.
Local police advise road users to be aware and monitor provisional signage closely rather than driving on auto-pilot. Reducing speed is vital to ensure adequate reaction times as lanes narrow and traffic patterns shift. Drivers should also maintain an increased safety distance from leading vehicles to account for unexpected braking as others adjust to the route.
Avoiding delays via alternative routes
Coastal views as beautiful as they are might be tempting, but choosing inland roads will likely save time just during this construction phase. Avoiding the affected seafront stretch is highly recommended for those on a tight schedule. Alternative routes, such as Avenida Federico García Lorca or Avenida de las Palmeras, will provide more reliable options for crossing the town without encountering roadwork bottlenecks.
Infrastructure improvements of this scale require public patience and cooperation to ensure safety. This specific section of the Water Highway is part of a multi-million-euro investment by Acosol and the Junta de Andalucia. These works aim to modernise the 40-year-old water supply network, providing better resilience for residents and businesses across the Costa del Sol. Stay updated on further mobility announcements as the project moves toward its next phase. Give yourself extra time and drive carefully.
