The Costa Blanca municipality of Dolores celebrated the 8th edition of the annual Artichoke Season End Festival, an initiative aimed at appreciating one of the Vega Baja’s most important and iconic crops. During the event, residents and visitors of Dolores celebrated with music, delicious rice dishes, workshops, and even a bike tour, amid an atmosphere of camaraderie and festivities.
A themed festival revolving around the Vega Baja’s most important crop
The festival, taking place over the whole weekend, began with a cooking demonstration by the hospitality students of IES Los Montesinos, who prepared a rice dish and a cocktail for attendees. During the day, there was also live music and entertainment to promote the upcoming Dolores Livestock Fair. Saturday concluded with the Hamburgesada party, where more than 1,200 hamburgers were served to hungry attendees.
The next day, on Sunday, the municipality held an Artichoke Peeling Contest, as well as a Canning Workshop and the Artichoke Omelette Workshop. The festival closed out with a bike tour through Dolores’s orchard, a demonstration of hemp crafts, a wooden artichoke sculpture, and various gastronomic offerings including artichoke omelet as well as a giant artichoke paella.
The artichoke is one of the most important crops in the Vega Baja region, holding significance not only in the delicious gastronomic offerings of the province, but also in cultural and educational events. Dolores is far from the only municipality to hold celebrations in honour of this important crop; Almoradi, another Costa Blanca town, also recently hosted its own Artichoke School Olympics, which this year celebrated its sixth edition.
The artichoke, celebrated all over the Costa Blanca
The event included the participation of some 300 students and featured a variety of artichoke-based activities, both sport and educational. Some of the highlights included a relay race using an artichoke as a baton, a javelin-throwing contest, a challenge to toss artichokes into a “gol,” a container used by farmers during artichoke harvests, a competition to see who could peel artichokes the fastest, and a composing and performing competition for raps about artichokes. Artichoke trivia was also a popular activity, and organisers created math problems related to the sector for students to solve.
All across the coastline, these municipalities and towns continue to appreciate this important and delicious vegetable, and Dolores is still celebrating the success of this amusing spring festival.
