During the first week of May, the Valencian Community Blood Transfusion Centre carried out a tour across multiple municipalities in order to collect blood donations from kindhearted volunteers. The donation of blood is essential at all times of the year, and around 250 units of blood are needed daily in the province of Alicante.

Mobile blood donation trucks take to multiple municipalities in May

The tour is part of an effort by health officials in Alicante to bring much-needed supplies to those in need. Some of the municipalities scheduled for the visits include La Aparecida (Orihuela), Callosa de Segura, San Miguel de Salinas, and Torrevieja. These mobile blood donation vehicles make donating convenient, fast, and accessible for many communities, especially for residents who otherwise wouldn’t think to donate. These mobile units can also be quickly deployed to sites of emergencies and accidents, and can provide blood on the spot for victims in need.

Additionally, each donation provides donors with a minor physical examination, which can often alert them to other underlying health concerns. These screenings can reveal issues including anemia, iron deficiency, or problems with blood viscosity.

Places to donate blood in the Vega Baja region and requirements

Here is where the mobile centres will be within the next few days:

  • La Aparecida:  Tuesday, May 5, from 5:00pm to 8:30pm at the La Carretera Multipurpose Centre.
  • San Miguel de Salinas:  Tuesday, May 5, 5:00pm to 8:30pm at the Town Hall, C/ 19 de abril, 34.
  • Torrevieja:  Wednesday, May 6, from 5:00pm to 8:30pm at the University Hospital, in the main hall.
  • Torrevieja : Wednesday, May 6 and Friday, May8 from 5:00pm to 8:30pm at the Multipurpose Building, Avda. de Habaneras, 6.

As for the requirements, the list is relatively short: Donors must be over the age of 18, weigh more than 50 kilogrammes, and they must not arrive on an empty stomach. Health officials stress that each person who donates blood can save up to three lives.

Saving lives in the Vega Baja

The donations already collected will prove life-saving for countless people in the Vega Baja region, including those suffering from cancer, sudden medical emergencies, scheduled surgeries which will involve significant blood loss, those giving birth to a child, and more. The donations already made are greatly appreciated, and officials urge anyone thinking about donating blood to find out where they can take part.
