Rescuers mobilised at speed on Sunday, May 10, following reports of a serious incident near a popular coastal viewpoint in Nerja.
A 60-year-old Spanish resident of Nerja, originally from somewhere in northern Spain, tumbled roughly three metres in an area with stairs and showers close to Carabeo Beach. Witnesses contacted emergency services around 5.15pm, which instantly launched a coordinated response from provincial firefighters, 061 medical teams, Guardia Civil officers and local police. Teams located the injured man in rugged terrain with complicated access from land.
Personnel managed to stabilise him before carrying the casualty to a safer spot for initial treatment. Medical staff later transferred him to Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquia. He arrived at 6.55pm suffering polytrauma that included facial and spinal fractures. Doctors kept him under observation in the emergency department on Monday, with possible referral to maxillofacial specialists in Malaga still under review.
Investigators examine dispute before fall
Civil Guard personnel are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. One line of inquiry considers whether another man pushed the victim during an argument moments earlier. The police are continuing to gather statements and evidence at the scene.
History of accidents raises safety concerns
This event draws attention to risks at steep coastal spots in Nerja frequented by many. Similar dangers appeared in June 2025 at the same Mirador del Bendito location. A 43-year-old local man named Roberto J. G. fell around eight metres, sustained a severe head injury, spent nine days in intensive care at Malaga Regional Hospital, and eventually died from his injuries.
Complex geography in these cliffside areas often demands elaborate rescue operations because of limited land access and sharp drops. Firefighters regularly deploy specialist equipment for such call-outs along the Axarquia coastline. 79-year-old British pensioner Iain Stanley perished earlier this year when he fell near the Perla Marina Hotel and was not found for days.
Busy weekend for emergency services
On Saturday evening, May 9, Nerja firefighters assisted at a separate incident on the A-7 motorway near kilometre 925 towards Malaga’s capital. Four people inside the single vehicle involved escaped before crews arrived around 6.40pm. Teams secured the site, supported the casualties until ambulances took over, stabilised the car and cleared debris from the road. Operations lasted about one hour.
Local authorities urge caution at viewpoints and paths with steep sections to prevent future tragedies in this scenic yet demanding part of the Malaga province.
