Casa Fuerte Bezmiliana in Rincon de la Victoria proudly opens its doors Friday, May 15 to present the stunning Nuda Domus: Map of Memory, an incredibly powerful solo exhibition by Cadiz-born figurative artist Fernando Benítez Gabriel celebrating the form of the female body, flamenco, and Andalusian identity.
What is ‘Nuda Domus: Map of Memory’ about?
Nuda Domus, Latin for “naked house”, is a collection of oil paintings where Benitez Gabriel strips back and explores the female figure. These are not your typical nude paintings. The women in Benitez Gabriel’s canvases are real people with real stories and unusually, each model played an active role in shaping how she was painted and portrayed.
Flamenco, the mediterranean, and the skin as a map of time
Flamenco runs through the work not as a visual prop but as something much deeper, a way of expressing who these women really are and where they come from. The artist wants you to feel the influence of both the Mediterranean and Atlantic in each and every canvas.
Who is Fernando Benitez Gabriel?
Born in Cadiz in 1973, art ran in his genes. Benitez Gabriel trained under his father, sculptor Nando Benitez. He describes himself as a contemporary heir to the Andalusian pictorial tradition, grounded in flamenco, southern light, and the sea, painting very much on his own terms not bothered by passing trends. Nuda Domus is complemented by works from his previous jazz and landscape series, offering a bigger picture of an artist with a truly unique individual style.
