For any art lovers in Almería’s capital city this Monday, May 18, don’t miss out on the opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the province’s leading art museums without spending a single cent.
In celebration of International Museum Day, the Museum of Spanish Contemporary Realism (MUREC) will open its doors free of charge as part of a special programme of cultural activities running throughout the weekend.
Located in the heart of Almería, MUREC is home to an impressive permanent collection of Spanish realist art and regularly stages acclaimed temporary exhibitions that attract visitors from across Andalucía and beyond.
Free entry at Almería’s MUREC for International Museum Day
Although the museum is usually closed on Mondays, MUREC will exceptionally open on Monday May 18 from 10am to 2pm and again from 4.30pm to 8.30pm, offering free admission throughout the day.
The initiative forms part of the International Museum Day celebrations organised by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), which this year carries the theme “Museums uniting a divided world”. The campaign aims to highlight the role museums play in encouraging dialogue, respect and understanding between communities.
Juan Manuel Martín, director of MUREC and the Ibáñez Cosentino Art Foundation, said the message behind this year’s celebration serves as an important reminder that “peace and harmony should prevail in the world”.
Weekend programme of family activities and film
Alongside free admission, MUREC has organised a varied programme of activities suitable for all ages. Friday evening will feature a cinema and live music event in the museum courtyard presented by Cinetones, including screenings of classic short films such as Charlot the Immigrant.
Saturday’s schedule includes a special guided itinerary inspired by the International Museum Day theme, as well as family workshops and a storytelling session titled Your Hands are Doves of Peace.
All activities are free, although advance booking is required due to limited capacity.

MUREC’s permanent collection includes works by some of Spain’s most celebrated artists, including Joaquín Sorolla, Antonio López, Julio Romero de Torres and Carmen Laffón. The museum also showcases works from the renowned Realists of Madrid group.
