Things are hotting up in Alhaurin el Grande as the town sets up for the annual May Fair, from Wednesday, May 27 to Sunday, May 31. This year there is a longer extended programme and new additions, it will be one to remember.
A beautiful young face to represent the celebrations
This year’s official poster is an image of a charming local girl, five-year-old Maria Galiano Benitez, whose face will represent the spirit of the festivities. Alhaurin el Grande Town Hall unveiled both the poster and the full programme at a presentation held on the theatre terrace.
Children’s day and opening night
Wednesday is designated Children’s Day. At 7.30pm, the colourful Grand fair procession sets off, led by the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth Band, the Manuel Amador Musical Association, and the Holy True Cross Music and Cultural Group. The official inauguration and ceremonial lighting follow at 9.30pm, with a Miss and Mister Gala from 10pm and the Youth Tent running from 11pm to 4am.
Senior citizens’ day and live music
Thursday has the traditional senior citizens’ lunch beginning at 1pm at the sports centre, organised by A Yes for Life, United Against Cancer, including live entertainment and the election of the King and Queen of Our Elders. Evening acts include El Callejon from 10pm, Alejados headlining at 11pm, and DJ Vicente80s from 1am.
Local holiday and fair in full swing
Friday is a local holiday. There will be a Rociera Mass at noon in Plaza Baja to open the day, with the daytime fair running from 1pm to 7pm featuring dance performances and live acts including Francis Leon and Puro Indie. Evening fun spans multiple stages from 7pm, including Rocio Silva, La Lubera, and Juan Jesus El Manta, Duo Siroko Flamenpop, and Son Dkanela, before Gonzalo Hermida headlines from 11pm to 5am.
Dance, horses and headliners
Saturday sees dance academies perform in the town centre plazas from 2pm. Frasco de Pruna plays from 7pm, a horse tack competition runs from 8pm, and Ramses performs from 10pm. Mesalla headlines at 11pm, followed by El Sebas de la Calle at 1am, with DJ Vicente80s through to 5am.
Extended finale and drone spectacular
Sunday’s fair runs from 1pm to 3am, with the Youth Tent opening for the first time on this day with Mas que Amigos from 8pm. Son del Puerto performs at 3pm, Francis Leon at 5pm, and Somos del Sur at 10pm. Manuel Ponce and Luis Benítez perform at 5pm ahead of a full equestrian spectacular from 8pm featuring doma vaquera, garrocha displays, Sevillanas on horseback, and high school riding. A magnificent drone display at 11.45pm brings the fair to a close.
Food, drink and practical information
Throughout the week, local clubs and brotherhoods manage their own bars and food stalls across the fairground and town centre. A daily noise-free period runs from 7pm to 8.30pm. Services include a dedicated anti-harassment point, an animal welfare point, a children’s play area, and reinforced bus services on Saturday. Local broadcaster ATV will air a dedicated fair programme across all five days.
With more than enough to keep you busy and something for everyone, the feria is well worth a visit.
For the full line up of events, all details and further information see the official programme on the Alhaurin el Grande town hall website.
