Police officers from Zoetermeer in the Netherlands responded immediately to reports of suspicious activity near a residence in the Rokkeveen neighbourhood in south Holland on the evening of Tuesday, May 19. Multiple units, including uniformed and plainclothes personnel, conducted a thorough search of the area.
Officers soon located a man in a garden corner attempting to conceal himself under a cheap Ikea clothes hamper that was being used as a garden waste bin. The trouble was, His legs remained fully exposed despite the effort to cover his head and torso.
Social media posts from Zoetermeer police detailed the encounter with a photo showing the embarrassing position, like a child who thinks that others cannot see him because he cannot see them.
On being questioned by the police, the man claimed he was looking for somewhere to sleep, and the upturned bin seemed a good option.
Police decide to let the man go with a caution
Further conversation established the individual as homeless man and simply seeking overnight shelter. Police resolved the matter calmly with no charges related to malicious intent.
Online reactions quickly spread after the police shared images and descriptions on Facebook and Instagram. Many observers remarked on the comical nature of the failed hiding spot.
Incidents like this reveal how seemingly alarming calls can sometimes involve human circumstances rather than criminal intent.
Hungry intruder stops to fry sausage in Etten-Leur home
Another memorable intrusion case took place in Etten-Leur, in the province of North Brabant during August 2024 when police caught a burglar in the middle of preparing food. Officers arrived at a residence following a break-in report and discovered the suspect actively frying sausages in the kitchen.
Local authorities described the scene as a bizarre turn of events because the intruder had put snacking before a quick escape. Photos circulated showing the frying setup still active upon their arrival.
Similar odd episodes surface periodically across the Netherlands. Some intruders have ended up trapped in windows or doorways while attempting hasty exits from properties. Others left behind obvious evidence through careless actions during their time inside homes.
