The Roomba was a great design but had its limitations. The Thermomix, a versatile, all-in-one multicooker and food processor, was a great help in the kitchen, even if it did take up too much space on the work surface. But the home tech everyone has been waiting for is the one that makes beds, fills the dishwasher, cooks the dinner, dusts and washes. Well, it was only a matter of time.
It is now possible to rent access to futuristic domestic assistance thanks to an innovative startup called Gatsby.
The new service allows people to book a humanoid robot via an app that handles everyday chores, including tidying rooms, loading dishwashers, folding clothes and dusting and polishing. Advanced technology is said to combine precise movements with neural networks to deliver reliable performance in residential settings.
High costs make ownership unlikely for most
Androids designed for household duties often carry steep price tags that range from €25,000 euros to over €99,000. Models such as KAI feature synthetic skin with 18,000 tactile points and 22 active joints for complex actions like assembling items or even threading needles. Many interested households will find direct purchase remains out of reach at the moment despite clear benefits in daily organisation.
First residential deployment achieves positive results
Interesting Engineering reported that Gatsby completed a landmark assignment by dispatching an autonomous robot to a home in the United States. Brushed aluminium construction enabled the machine to slip through into hard-to-reach cluttered spaces independently and restore order effectively.
Simple booking process offers flexibility
Housework-phobic people like me can select the service for a mere $150, which converts to roughly €130, regardless of property size. The flat rate covers a full cleaning session where the robot collects items, organises belongings and leaves spaces spotless.
Future prospects for domestic robotics grow
This rental approach is opening possibilities for wider adoption of humanoid helpers in private homes across the world. Families and individuals can start to explore options that previously existed only in concept designs and the Jetsons cartoon. Continued development in robot capabilities promises even greater support for routine tasks while keeping costs manageable through hourly or session-based arrangements.
Practical benefits appeal to busy households
Modern lifestyles leave limited time for cleaning and maintenance activities. Gatsby can deal with this demand by supplying capable machines that operate safely around furniture and family members. Early users note improvements in home environment after single visits from these autonomous robot maids.
The service is currently only available in San Francisco, but considering the rate at which robotic technology is developing, scope for European businesses opening in the coming years looks promising.
