Visitors and residents heading to Dénia’s coastline this summer can expect cleaner beaches, more equipment and longer periods of intensive maintenance after the town launched a new beach management contract designed to cope with growing demand during the tourist season.

The upgraded service came into effect on June 1 and represents one of the biggest overhauls of Dénia’s beach maintenance operations in more than a decade.

More machinery and staff on the sand

Under the new contract, the municipality has increased both personnel and equipment dedicated to keeping its beaches clean. A workforce of 23 people will operate during the peak summer period, supported by an expanded fleet of machinery including additional sand-cleaning equipment and vehicles.

Town officials say the extra resources will allow cleaning work to be carried out more efficiently across Dénia’s nearly 20 kilometres of coastline.

A key change is the creation of two dedicated maintenance teams. One will focus on beaches in the south, while the other will cover the northern stretch of coastline, allowing simultaneous operations in different areas and reducing response times.

Peak season starts earlier

The busiest phase of the beach maintenance programme has also been extended. Previously concentrated around the height of summer, the enhanced service will now run from June 1 until September 30.

Local authorities believe the longer high-season period better reflects current visitor patterns, with large numbers of tourists arriving earlier in the summer and continuing into September.

Beach access paths will also receive more regular attention, with scheduled cleaning several times each week throughout the peak season.

Focus on sustainability

The contract includes environmental measures aimed at improving the management of posidonia, the protected Mediterranean seagrass that frequently washes ashore along parts of the Costa Blanca.

Plans are underway for a dedicated treatment facility where collected posidonia can be processed and sand separated for reuse on local beaches. Officials say the project will help improve coastal conservation while reducing waste.

The changes come as Dénia prepares for another busy summer season, with local authorities aiming to maintain high standards across its beaches while balancing tourism demands with environmental protection.
