The Council of Ministers of Spain has officially given the green light to the renewal of the Senior Cinema programme, which maintains movie ticket prices at just €2 on Tuesdays for those over the age of 65, at participating cinemas. The measure will begin in July 2026 and will be in effect until June 2027.

Who can participate in Senior Cinema?

This benefit is reserved exclusively for those aged 65 or older, with legal residence in Spain, who can prove their age with a DNI, passport, residence card or other forms of identification.

How can I get my tickets?

First, interested moviegoers should check if their local cinema is participating in the Senior Cinema programme, as not all theatres will offer the reduced prices. While there is no singular nationwide list, seniors can check by contacting their local cinema directly or by seeing options for discounts as they are purchasing their tickets online.

After confirming, interested visitors can get their tickets to see some of the biggest box office hits either in-person at the cinema or online, provided they have identification to prove their age.

Increasing cinema attendance after a stark drop in recent years

The measure, which has a budget of around €11.5 million, comes about as a way to increase cinema attendance among seniors, a demographic whose cinema viewership sharply dropped (by around 40 per cent) after the COVID-19 global pandemic in 2020. The programme will also encourage seniors to go out, get active, and enjoy some of the biggest films of the year, while also giving a boost to local theatres.

This initiative was originally proposed by the Ministry of Culture in July 2023, going under the name “Tuesdays at the Cinema” and later, “Senior Tuesdays.” After the global pandemic, the measure was imperative in the steady re-establishment of cinema attendance among this demographic, and since its introduction, the programme has only continued to grow.

A major success in Spain: Inspiring seniors to snag tickets and head to the movies

The measure has been a resounding success in Spain: its second edition, which ran from May 2024 to December 2024, saw 1,689,115 senior citizens go to the movies, representing 764,391 more than in its first edition and an 83 per cent increase. Additionally, in its current campaign, which has been running for 28 weeks, around one and a half million seniors have visited the cinema.

The films to look out for this year

Among seniors in the country, Spanish films consistently rank among the favourites. Some of the biggest movies expected to smash the box office in Spain this year include Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, Backrooms, Masters of the Universe, and El ser querido.
