Dénia has unveiled the latest addition to its growing cultural landscape, transforming part of the town into an open-air celebration of literature with the installation of new ceramic panels featuring the words of two of its most celebrated writers, María Ibars and Juan Chabás. The initiative forms part of the city’s evolving “Travesía de las Palabras” (Crossing of Words) project, which aims to bring literature into everyday public spaces.

Literature meets the streets

The first two ceramic panels have now been installed along the route, displaying excerpts from the works of María Ibars and Juan Chabás, both deeply connected to Dénia and its cultural heritage. Rather than remaining confined to bookshelves and libraries, their words are now visible to residents and visitors as they move through the town.

The project seeks to encourage people to engage with local literature in a more accessible and interactive way. By incorporating literary texts into public spaces, Dénia hopes to strengthen the connection between its urban environment and the writers who helped shape its cultural identity.

Celebrating Dénia’s literary legacy

María Ibars is regarded as one of the most important Valencian-language authors associated with the Marina Alta region. Her work often reflected local traditions, landscapes and everyday life. Juan Chabás, meanwhile, was a prominent writer, historian and literary critic whose influence extended far beyond the region.

The installation of their texts is intended not only as a tribute to their contributions but also as an invitation for new generations to discover their work. The ceramic format was chosen to blend with Dénia’s Mediterranean character while creating permanent cultural landmarks throughout the town.

More panels planned

The “Travesía de las Palabras” project is expected to continue expanding, with additional literary excerpts planned for other locations. The long-term vision is to create a route where visitors can explore Dénia through the words of authors who have written about its landscapes, history and people.

The initiative reflects the city’s wider commitment to culture and heritage, using public spaces to tell stories and preserve local identity. As more panels are added, residents and tourists alike will be able to experience Dénia not just through its streets and landmarks, but through the voices of the writers who immortalised them.
