More than 1,000 people unite for ALS in Benidorm charity race

The race was organised by members of the Marina Baixa Provincial Fire Consortium and led by firefighter Paco Pedrera, who has been a driving force behind efforts to raise awareness of the disease. This year’s event carried extra emotion as colleagues paid tribute to Pedrera following his retirement from the fire service after years of public service.

Athletes battle for victory

Participants of all ages were able to get involved, with the programme including a competitive 5K race, Nordic walking events, children’s races and non-competitive community activities. Families lined the route to cheer on competitors as they made their way through Benidorm in warm early summer temperatures.

The sporting action was highly competitive. Local athlete Juanán Fernández of Club Atletismo Benidorm claimed victory in the men’s race with a time of 14 minutes and 37 seconds, narrowly edging Martín Nicolas by just one second. In the women’s event, Madrid firefighter and triathlete Sara Bonilla crossed the finish line first in 17 minutes and 22 seconds.

Firefighters create memorable finish

One of the most memorable moments came near the finish line when dozens of firefighters joined the event wearing full operational gear weighing more than 25 kilograms. As runners tackled the final uphill stretch towards Plaza de Sus Majestades los Reyes de España, firefighters sprayed water from a fire engine to help cool competitors and spectators alike.

The gesture created a festival atmosphere and highlighted the strong link between the emergency services and the local community.

Raising awareness of ALS

Among those attending were Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez, Sports Councillor Javier Jordá and representatives from emergency services and local institutions. Their presence reflected the broad support the race has received since it was first launched.

The event’s ultimate goal was to raise awareness of ALS, a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells responsible for muscle movement. Campaigners continue to call for more research funding, better support services and greater public understanding of the condition.

Organisers described this year’s race as a major success and thanked volunteers, sponsors and participants for helping keep the spotlight on a cause that affects thousands of families across Spain.
