Mazarron has united to host the FIFA-AREF “They Play” event, dedicated to promoting and raising the profile of women’s football. This initiative, promoted by the Mazarron Town Council’s Department of Sports, has been organised by the Football Federation of the Region of Murcia, also known as FFRM, and took place at the Mazarron Sports Complex on Saturday, June 13.
A day dedicated to sport, camaraderie and celebrating Murcia’s female athletes
The main highlight of the day was the Women’s Talent Cup, an event that brought together hundreds of female footballers across 18 teams and in varying age groups. These represented the different districts and areas of the Region of Murcia, with an attendance of some 1,500 people. Some of the residents who showed up to support the athletes included their peers, coaches, family members and friends.
Cameos from Spanish national team and other leading figures in women’s football
The “They Play” event also featured leading figures in Spanish women’s football, including players from the Spanish national team, their coach, Sonia Bermúdez, and the director of women’s football for the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Reyes Belver. Attendees and fans also enjoyed an exhibition that showcased the national team’s most important trophies, including the World Cup, the UEFA Nations League trophy, and the European Championship trophy.
Mazarron, a sports hub on the Costa Calida
Nearly 400 female footballers in total showed up to participate in this shining event, setting an example for young, aspirational footballers and showcasing their prowess in this popular sport. Mazarron Councillor for Sports, María Isabel Carrillo, highlighted the importance of the municipality hosting an event of this calibre, stating, “it promotes equal opportunities in sport and serves as an inspiration for young female athletes who dream of developing a career in football.”
Mazarron has quickly become a hotspot and the municipality of choice for sports related events, whether professional-level competitions or friendly sports leisure tourism. Overall, the day combined sport, community spirit and the promotion of the values of women’s football.
