The Costa Calida municipality of Puerto de Mazarron is celebrating a major milestone as La Barraca, a family-run establishment that has long been beloved by locals and visitors alike, has been awarded a prestigious “Solete” award in the 2026 Repsol Guide, the premier travel guidebook in Spain. This distinction honours restaurants and establishments that offer high-quality service, food, and atmosphere, and La Barraca has ticked all the boxes to earn this coveted title.
A local legacy built on fresh catches and Mediterranean recipes
To be specific, the Repsol Guide praised the restaurant as an unmissable destination for traditional rice dishes, and drew particular attention to La Barraca’s seafood paella and its premium selection of fresh fish. The restaurant, which focuses on traditional Mediterranean fare, is deeply rooted in the local fresh seafood sphere, with daily catches sourced directly from the local fishermen’s guild, called the Cofradía de Pescadores. These rice dishes have become one of the biggest draws for both locals and travellers in the Murcian town.
The highly coveted Solete award: Why this award honours a different kind of dining experience
Unlike high-end fine dining awards, the Solete award looks for distinct criteria that restaurants must meet in order to earn the distinction, and rewards a different kind of dining experience. Inspectors look for a menu that is accessible to everyday budgets, restaurants with a casual and welcoming vibe, restaurants that are loyally rooted to local identity, and restaurants that are frequently recommended by locals and visitors.
In addition to La Barraca, the Region of Murcia now boasts more than two dozen establishments that have earned distinctions from the Repsol Guide, including El Mosqui in Cabo de Palos, La Tropical in Los Alcazares, El Poli in Aguilas, and Magoga in Cartagena.
La Barraca: Nearly five decades of coastal hospitality
La Barraca, founded in November of 1980, has been expanding and evolving over the last nearly 50 years of operation, while at the same time staying true to its core identity: fresh ingredients, traditional Mediterranean recipes, and a warm and welcoming atmosphere, whether for returning visitors or curious newcomers. Today, the restaurant continues to thrive, and as the latest of Murcian establishments to receive the Solete honour, La Barraca shows no signs of slowing down.
The restaurant’s management, upon receiving the award, expressed a deep gratitude for their patrons and staff, some of whom have been serving the restaurant for decades. Maintaining strict standards of quality and service, and combining a rich history with a commitment to local sourcing of ingredients, La Barraca is a shining example of Murcian coastal hospitality.
