Northern regions of Spain are preparing for severe weather this weekend as the first summer storms of 2026 arrive from east to west. Yellow and orange alerts cover vast areas in the north, while southern and eastern coastal zones continue under warm, dry conditions that suit beach plans perfectly. Some readers travelling this weekend may need to pass through affected zones when moving between regions.

Friday storm alerts cover the north

Yellow alerts for extreme storms affect the entire north from Galicia in the west across to Aragon and interior areas of Catalonia. Localised flooding ranks among the main risks during the day. Meanwhile, temperatures are due to climb as high as 38ºC in southern parts of Aragon and the Basque Country, where an orange alert covers risks of storms with heavy hail. Drivers face potential difficulties when crossing the country under these conditions as hail and strong winds develop.

Saturday warnings extend south of the Pyrenees

A yellow alert continues on Saturday for storms, hail and the possibility of flash-flooding south of the Pyrenees. Advice points to avoiding mountain roads and using motorways instead for safer passage. North of Mallorca expects a battering from the first summer storms of 2026, with the activity set to last throughout the weekend and bring unsettled spells to parts of the island.

Rain spreads and ends the heatwave

Rain set to cover the northern half of the country throughout the weekend. This development returns temperatures to more reasonable levels down south and brings the current heatwave to an end as June closes. Southern and southeastern zones are expected to stay dry and warm by contrast, with no major changes expected in those areas.

Comfortable warmth on southern and eastern Spanish coasts

South and southeastern coasts are predicted will offer a more comfortable 30ºC throughout during each day of the weekend. For inland spots such as Granada and Cordoba, we can add another five degrees to that figure in line with normal conditions for the period. The Alicante province sees the highest coastal readings, at around 35ºC. Nighttime temperatures hold above 22°C in all locations, with clear skies dominating.

Steps for safe weekend travel

Anyone planning journeys this weekend will benefit from checking routes in advance and allowing extra time for possible delays caused by weather in the north. People moving between northern and southern areas need to stay updated on changing conditions through official sources.

Meanwhile, everyone staying on the southern and eastern coasts, plus Mallorca coasts, can enjoy largely clear skies and pleasant warmth despite the broader national picture of unsettled weather further north. Next week, it will all change once again.
