Tourist finds kilo of cocaine in Mallorca sea weeks after father made almost identical discovery

A holiday swim at one of Mallorca’s most popular beaches took an extraordinary turn when a tourist pulled a package containing around one kilogram of cocaine from the sea… just weeks after a father fishing with his children reportedly made an almost identical discovery elsewhere on the island.

The remarkable coincidence has raised fresh questions about why packages of cocaine are repeatedly turning up in Mallorca’s coastal waters. While investigators have not linked the incidents, they come against the backdrop of another major cocaine seizure at the Port of Alcudia.

Tourist finds cocaine while swimming at Playa de Muro

The latest discovery happened at Playa de Muro, where a tourist spotted a suspicious package floating in the water while out swimming at around 5pm.

Rather than leaving it behind, the swimmer carried the parcel back to shore and handed it to lifeguards, who immediately contacted the Local Police. Officers attended the scene and confirmed the package contained approximately one kilogram of cocaine before transferring the investigation to the Guardia Civil.

The parcel was wrapped in waterproof material bearing an image of Jesus Christ alongside a Spanish phrase that translates as “You will always live in the memory of all your friends”. Investigators have not released further information about where it came from, and no arrests have been made.

The Guardia Civil is now investigating how the drugs ended up in the sea and whether the package was accidentally lost, deliberately discarded or drifted ashore from elsewhere.

For holidaymakers enjoying the height of the summer season, it was an astonishing discovery at one of Mallorca’s busiest beaches.

Father fishing with his children made similar discovery

What makes the Playa de Muro incident even more unusual is that it is not the first time this has happened in Mallorca in recent weeks.

Only a short time earlier, a father enjoying a fishing trip with his children in Portocolom reportedly reeled in another package containing around one kilogram of cocaine after it became tangled in his fishing gear.

Police were called to that discovery as well, and the incident quickly attracted attention because of the unlikely circumstances in which the drugs were found.

In both incidents, ordinary members of the public unexpectedly stumbled across kilogram-sized packages of cocaine while simply enjoying time by the sea. However, authorities have not suggested the discoveries are connected.

More cocaine seized in Mallorca

The two sea discoveries have also come within days of another significant cocaine seizure on the island.

On June 30, the Spanish Tax Agency confirmed that Customs Surveillance officers and the Guardia Civil intercepted 16 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a specially constructed false compartment beneath a vehicle arriving on the Barcelona-to-Alcudia ferry.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking after a specialist detection dog alerted officers during inspections at the port. The drugs were estimated to have a street value of more than €950,000.

Authorities have not publicly linked the Alcudia seizure with either of the packages recovered from the sea.

The official operation involved cocaine concealed inside a vehicle, whereas the Playa de Muro and Portocolom discoveries involved sealed packages found in the water.

Why is cocaine appearing around Mallorca?

That is now the question investigators are trying to answer.

The Guardia Civil’s investigation into the Playa de Muro discovery is focused on establishing where the package originated and how it came to be floating offshore. Officials have not identified any criminal organisation, vessel or trafficking route connected to the find.

Although packages of drugs are occasionally recovered from the sea after being lost or discarded during trafficking operations, authorities have not said this is what happened in Mallorca.

For now, the three incidents remain separate investigations. Yet taken together, they paint an unusual picture: within just a few weeks, one tourist out for a swim and one father fishing with his children both unexpectedly found kilogram packages of cocaine in Mallorca’s waters, while customs officers uncovered another major shipment arriving through one of the island’s ports.

Whether that is an extraordinary coincidence or a sign of a wider problem is something investigators have yet to determine. Until then, the repeated appearance of cocaine around Mallorca’s coastline remains one of the summer’s most unusual and closely watched mysteries.
