He’s never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around or desert you. Pop icon Rick Astley is returning to the coast this week, headlining the Starlite Occident festival in Marbella on Friday, July 10.

A huge career over two very different chapters

Rick Astley’s career began in 1987 when Never Gonna Give You Up became a global phenomenon, earning him a BRIT Award and top chart positions worldwide. Follow-up singles like Together Forever and Whenever You Need Somebody brought him the reputation as one of the 80’s most recognisable voices.

A major career resurgence arrived years later when in 2016 his album 50, flung him back up to the top of the UK charts. In recent years, he has sustained his live presence through high-profile collaborations with contemporary rock and indie acts, including Foo Fighters and Blossoms.

The ‘Rickrolling’ phenomenon that made him a meme

Astley’s legacy was uniquely expanded by the modern viral internet prank known as “rickrolling.” Originating in the mid-2000s, the meme involved tricking web users into clicking hyperlinks that redirected to the Never Gonna Give You Up music video in which Astley performs his signature moves. This digital phenomenon bought his iconic track to a completely new generation of international fans.

The concert take’s place at the festival’s stunning Auditorio in the Cantera de Nagueles. Doors open from 8pm, with the main performance scheduled for 10pm. Tickets for the evening are currently available starting from €47. Rick fans can enjoy a live set showing off his classic 80’s hits with material from his recent albums.

Due to security check-ins and the popularity of the venue’s pre-show dining options, early arrival at the quarry is highly recommended, all attendees under the age of 18 must exit the premises immediately following the end of the main concert performance.

For an evening of vocal excellence, sing-a-long tracks and nostalgia, head down to Starlite on Friday, July 10. For more information and ticket bookings, visit the Starlite festival website directly.
