An 81-year-old woman has died after drowning at Las Fuentes beach in Alcossebre, despite the determined efforts of beachgoers and emergency crews to save her.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at the popular Costa del Azahar resort, when the Emergency Information and Coordination Centre (CICU) received an alert that a person had been spotted floating in the sea.

Emergency services immediately mobilised a large response, dispatching a SAMU advanced life support ambulance, a basic life support unit and a Primary Care medical team to the scene.

Rescue efforts began immediately

Before professional rescuers arrived, members of the public entered the water and brought the woman ashore. Several beachgoers immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), working together in an attempt to keep her alive until paramedics reached the beach.

Once on scene, medical professionals continued advanced resuscitation procedures using specialist equipment and techniques. Despite their prolonged efforts, they were unable to revive the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later confirmed that the victim was 81 years old.

Investigation continues

As is standard procedure following an unexpected death, an autopsy will now be carried out to establish the exact cause of death. While the incident is currently being treated as a drowning, the post-mortem examination will determine whether any underlying medical condition may have contributed.

No further details about the woman have been released.

The tragedy occurred during one of the busiest periods of the summer season, with beaches across the Valencian Community welcoming large numbers of residents and holidaymakers enjoying the warm weather.

Emergency services regularly remind swimmers to take extra care when entering the sea, particularly during periods of high temperatures. Bathers are advised to remain within designated swimming areas, pay attention to beach flag warnings, avoid swimming alone where possible and leave the water immediately if they begin to feel unwell or tired.

The incident also highlights the vital role played by members of the public, whose quick reactions can make a significant difference in emergencies while professional help is on the way. In this case, however, despite the rapid intervention of nearby beachgoers and the extensive efforts of medical teams, the woman’s life could not be saved.

The death serves as a sobering reminder that the sea can present serious risks, even on busy beaches where lifeguards and emergency services are readily available.
