Passengers travelling from Manchester to Alicante experienced an unexpected interruption to their journey after a Ryanair flight was forced to divert to northern France.

Flight FR4007 took off from Manchester Airport on Tuesday July 14, bound for Spain’s Costa Blanca, but changed course while flying over France after the crew declared an emergency. The Boeing 737 diverted to Beauvais Airport, around 85 kilometres north of Paris, where it landed safely before continuing its journey later that day.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft departing its planned route before descending into Beauvais, with emergency services meeting the flight on arrival.

Although emergency diversions can be alarming for passengers, they are a standard safety procedure whenever a situation arises that requires an immediate landing at the nearest suitable airport.

Ryanair confirms diversion followed onboard medical incident

Ryanair later confirmed the diversion was prompted after a passenger became unwell during the flight.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “This flight from Manchester to Alicante (14 Jul) diverted to Paris Beauvais after a passenger became ill on board. Crew called ahead for medical assistance to meet the aircraft upon landing at Beauvais Airport. The passenger was disembarked and was met by medics.”

After the passenger had been transferred into the care of local medical teams, the aircraft resumed its journey to Alicante-Elche Airport.

No further details have been released regarding the passenger’s condition.

Flight later arrives safely in Alicante

Following the brief stop in France, the aircraft departed Beauvais and completed the remainder of the flight to Spain, arriving safely in Alicante later that day.

Medical emergencies remain one of the most common reasons commercial aircraft divert from their planned route. Airline crews receive specialist training to deal with onboard incidents and, when necessary, will divert to the closest airport where emergency medical care is immediately available.

While the unscheduled landing delayed passengers’ arrival on the Costa Blanca, the diversion ensured medical assistance could reach the affected traveller as quickly as possible, underlining the aviation industry’s long-standing principle that passenger safety always comes first.
