The sound of rock and roll echoed across Benidorm’s Levante Beach as nearly 400 swimmers from across Spain and beyond plunged into the Mediterranean for one of the Costa Blanca’s most distinctive sporting events.

The eighth Heartbreak Benidorm Crossing transformed the famous beachfront into a lively mix of endurance sport and live music, with competitors tackling a demanding 2.9-kilometre open-water course while classic rock tracks played throughout the morning. The event attracted swimmers from 27 Spanish provinces and nine different nationalities, underlining its growing reputation as one of the region’s standout summer sporting fixtures.

Starting at 9am beside Plaza del Torrejó, participants followed a circular route parallel to Levante Beach, swimming in front of Benidorm’s iconic skyline before making their way back to the shore. The final competitor crossed the finish line shortly before 11am to warm applause from spectators and organisers waiting on the beach.

Fast times in challenging conditions

Miguel Bou once again proved the man to beat, claiming the overall men’s title in 38 minutes and 42 seconds after another commanding performance in Benidorm’s waters. Daira Eluney Marín took top honours in the women’s race, stopping the clock at 41 minutes and 42 seconds.

The podium was completed by César Parra Cantos and Mateo Pesquer Campos in the men’s event, while Carla Domenech Hernani and María Peñas Bernabéu secured second and third place respectively in the women’s competition. Local pride also shone through, with Gabriel Pantaloni Spalla and Eliana Krist Sotelo Reynoso finishing as Benidorm’s fastest male and female swimmers.

More than just a swimming race

Organised by Club Deportivo Finisher with the support of Benidorm City Council’s Sports Department, the Heartbreak Crossing has built its reputation on offering something different from a traditional open-water race.

Instead of quiet concentration, swimmers are accompanied by a soundtrack of rock music, creating a festival-like atmosphere that draws supporters as well as competitors. After the race, medals and trophies were presented by Mayor Toni Pérez, Sports Councillor Javier Jordá and members of the local government before the celebrations continued ashore.

With its combination of sport, music and Benidorm’s spectacular coastal setting, the Heartbreak Crossing continues to grow in popularity year after year. The event has become a summer tradition on Levante Beach, attracting experienced open-water swimmers, enthusiastic amateurs and plenty of spectators eager to watch one of the Costa Blanca’s most unusual sporting spectacles.
