The race to the World Cup final isn’t restricted to just being on the pitch. Spanish fans are battling soaring demand, shrinking availability and eye-watering travel costs to reach New York.

Spanish fans race to New York as World Cup final sparks huge travel surge

Spain’s place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final has triggered an extraordinary rush for flights to New York, with airline data revealing a staggering 1,709 per cent increase in flight searches within hours of securing their place in Sunday’s showdown with Argentina.

The figures, released by low-cost long-haul airline Level, show the scale of excitement as thousands of Spanish supporters scramble to reach the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where the final will be played on Sunday, July 19

Airfares and hotel prices climb as demand explodes

Travel experts say last-minute seats on direct services from Madrid and Barcelona to New York are disappearing rapidly, with hotels across New York City and neighbouring New Jersey also reporting soaring demand

Some organised supporter packages, including flights, accommodation and match tickets, are now costing more than €8,900 per person, while the cheapest tickets for the final have climbed to around $7,800 (€6,700) before travel costs are have even been added.

The World Cup final is being hosted at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with most international supporters expected to arrive via John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Could it affect flights between Spain and the UK?

For most travellers looking to fly between UK and Spain the impact is expected to be minimal. However, aviation analysts say some knock-on effects are possible, particularly on routes linking Madrid and Barcelona with London Heathrow, as fans seek alternative connections to the United States after direct flights sell out. That could mean slightly higher fares or reduced availability on some Spain to UK services over the World Cup final weekend, although flights to regional UK airports are unlikely to see any significant disruption.

The main pressure remains on direct Spain to New York routes, and of course the Spanish football players themselves.
