Watch as Spain Ryanair flight erupts when captain reveals the World Cup result

Aragonese passenger Miguel thought a Sunday flight from Gran Canaria to Madrid had carried him away from one of Spain’s biggest nights. Then the captain came over the loudspeaker with the news everyone had been waiting for: Spain had beaten Argentina and won the 2026 World Cup.

A World Cup final heard through an airplane’s loudspeaker 

There are inconvenient times to board a plane, and then there is taking off while Spain stands on the edge of winning the World Cup. That was the situation facing Miguel, an Aragonese passenger travelling on a Ryanair flight between Gran Canaria and Madrid on Sunday, July 19. While thousands were gathering around television screens, filling public squares and finding space in packed bars, he was in an aircraft cabin.

Cadena SER reported that Miguel’s first reaction to the timing was simply that it was bad luck. Whatever happened in the final, he appeared destined to experience its closing moments away from the celebrations on the ground. The passengers already seemed to suspect that something important had happened. Several had their phones raised as the captain began announcing over the aircraft’s speaker system: the match was over and Spain were world champions.

The cabin erupted. Passengers cheered, applauded and recorded the unexpected announcement, turning a regular national flight into a small airborne extension of the celebrations spreading across Spain.

Ferran Torres gave Spain its second World Cup title

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time at the New York New Jersey Stadium, securing the country’s second men’s World Cup and its first since 2010. After 90 minutes without a goal, substitute Ferran Torres finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute. His finish gave Spain the victory and ended Argentina’s attempt to retain the trophy it won in 2022.

For supporters following the match in Spain, the goal released more than two hours of torturous tension. For those aboard the Gran Canaria flight, it was a very different experience. Being in the air while the final played out may have made the uncertainty feel even harder to bear. Then, suddenly, came the announcement from the cockpit: Spain had come out victorious.

Miguel may have missed the streets and the packed squares at the final whistle, but he didn’t have to celebrate alone.

Madrid prepared another welcome after the flight landed

On the ground, thousands celebrated through Sunday night in Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga and towns across Spain. Flags appeared from balconies, fireworks were launched and supporters poured into public spaces after the final whistle. The official celebration continues in Madrid on Monday, July 20. The Royal Spanish Football Federation said the team would attend official receptions before travelling through the capital in an open-top bus.

Music and entertainment at Plaza de Cibeles begin from 6pm, with the players and World Cup trophy expected to arrive at approximately 9pm.

The moment aboard the Gran Canaria flight was only a tiny part of Spain’s night. And thankfully, for the passengers inside that cabin, the captain ensured that being away from home and all the watch parties didn’t mean missing the celebration completely.
