Jávea’s coastal beauty comes to life in stunning new watercolour exhibition

Some places leave such a lasting impression that they inspire people to pick up a paintbrush. In Jávea, one local artist has transformed her love of the town’s coastline, historic streets and Mediterranean light into a collection that is now on display for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico Soler Blasco has opened “Entre el mar i la tosca”, a new exhibition by local watercolour artist María Rosa Torres Sánchez. The exhibition, which officially opened on Friday July 24 evening, showcases 30 original paintings celebrating some of Jávea’s most recognisable landscapes.

Inspired by everything from the town’s rugged coves and sparkling coastline to the charm of its historic centre, the works capture the distinctive atmosphere that has made Jávea one of the Costa Blanca’s most admired destinations.

Capturing the Mediterranean light

Watercolour is known for its delicate transparency, and Torres uses the medium to highlight the changing colours and light that define the local scenery.

Her paintings focus on the interplay between sunlight and shadow across traditional stone buildings, the Mediterranean Sea and the area’s famous tosca sandstone architecture. Rather than simply reproducing familiar views, each piece offers a personal interpretation of places that many residents pass every day.

The exhibition opening attracted dozens of visitors, including Mayor Rosa Cardona, Culture Councillor Mavi Pérez and other local representatives, who joined members of the public in viewing the collection for the first time.

On display until mid-August

Anyone who enjoys local art or wants to see Jávea from a fresh perspective has several weeks to visit the exhibition.

“Entre el mar i la tosca” remains open at the Museo Soler Blasco until 16 August, giving both residents and summer visitors the opportunity to explore Torres’ interpretation of the municipality through watercolour. Admission is free during the museum’s normal opening hours.

The exhibition is another example of Jávea’s busy cultural programme this summer, offering a quieter way to experience the town while celebrating the landscapes that continue to inspire local artists. Whether visitors recognise a favourite beach, a familiar street or one of the town’s historic landmarks, the collection invites them to pause and see Jávea through the eyes of someone who knows it intimately.
