What would you change about your local area?

A recent poll asked residents a simple question: What would you change about your local area? The responses highlighted a number of recurring concerns, with cleanliness, parking and spending priorities featuring most often. While opinions differed on the best solutions, many contributors agreed that improving everyday services would make a noticeable difference to the quality of life for everyone.

One of the strongest themes was the condition of streets and public spaces. Many respondents felt that more attention should be given to keeping the area clean. Michael Maldonado said, “Garbage pick-up more frequently, it’s always so awful to see the bins overfilled.” Jane Stapleton shared a similar concern, simply commenting, “Rubbish by the bins.” Sandie Bates also called for improvements, saying, “Clean the street of weeds and dog mess and overflowing broken bins.” Together, these responses suggest that residents would welcome greater investment in regular maintenance and waste collection.

Parking was another issue raised repeatedly. Anne Minter highlighted the need for better parking management, saying, “Parking availability. Either residents only areas or charging for car parks combined with parking meters.” David Cooke agreed that better organisation was needed, commenting, “More organization, more fines for illegal parking and police presence.” These opinions reflect the frustration many people experience when trying to find parking or dealing with inconsiderate parking practices.

Several respondents also questioned how public money is being spent. Angela Edgley felt that resources could be directed towards services that benefit residents more directly, saying, “Less money spent on fiestas and events, more money spent on helping the people – buses would be nice. Tidying up the filthy town.” Judith Dominique Wolfenegg expressed a similar view, commenting, “Maybe a bit less fiestas, that got really excessive over the last years and costs a fortune.” While community events are appreciated by many, these responses suggest that some residents believe essential services should take priority.

Overall, the poll shows that people are passionate about improving their local area and are keen to see practical changes. Although there were different opinions on how to achieve this, the most common responses focused on cleaner streets, more reliable rubbish collection, better parking arrangements and greater enforcement of parking rules. Many residents also felt that spending should be balanced more towards essential services rather than an increasing number of fiestas and events.
