Cuevas cemetery reveals its secrets after dark

For most people and in the majority of cases, visiting a cemetery happens in daylight and mostly in silence. On Friday July 31, however, Cuevas del Almanzora will offer a different view of San Miguel, tracing the art, symbols and human stories hidden among its memorials after sunset.

Stories written in stone after sunset

As daylight fades over Cuevas del Almanzora, a specialist guide will lead visitors between the memorials of San Miguel cemetery, looking for details that can easily pass unnoticed during an ordinary daytime visit. The route is called Secrets, Symbols and Mysteries, but its focus is firmly on local heritage. The council says the walk will uncover the cemetery’s hidden history, art and symbolism, giving the monuments and the people commemorated there room to tell a wider story.

From the first tour to a summer fixture

This is not the cemetery’s first evening in the spotlight. Cuevas del Almanzora held its inaugural guided route there in 2021, when the programme explored the lives and deaths of notable people buried at San Miguel, along with stories of love, loss, legend and belief. That first edition also drew attention to the site’s funerary monuments. Contemporary local coverage described the collection as one of the most highly regarded in Almería province, turning a familiar municipal space into an open-air record of the town’s social and artistic past. The route has since returned in later cultural programmes, and its appeal lies in the combination of a specialist guide, an unusual and somewhat mysterious after-dark setting and stories tied directly to local families and history, rather than a conventional museum visit.

The July 31 tour sits within Smartverano 2026, Cuevas del Almanzora’s programme of cultural, sporting and family events across June, July and August.

The meeting point is the forecourt of San Miguel cemetery and the advertised start time is 9.15pm. Ticket price, age restriction, capacity limit or accessibility arrangements should be checked directly with the Tourist Office before attending.
