Historic fleet of yachts thrill crowds in challenging Jávea regatta

The timeless elegance of classic yachts met testing Mediterranean conditions as some of the finest historic sailing vessels competed in the IV Regata Clásicos Comunitat Valenciana in Jávea. Over two demanding days from Friday July 24 to Sunday 26, crews navigated strong winds, sizeable waves and tactical racing to crown the latest champions in one of Spain’s most distinctive sailing events.

Hosted by the Club Náutico de Jávea, the regatta has become a highlight of the summer calendar for sailing enthusiasts, attracting beautifully restored vintage boats that celebrate the rich heritage of maritime craftsmanship while delivering fiercely competitive racing. This year’s event formed part of the XVI Trofeo Clásicos Mare Nostrum and counted towards the 2026 Copa de España de Vela Clásica, further strengthening its national importance.

Challenging conditions test crews

The final day provided a true examination of skill and experience. Sailors tackled a technical course consisting of two triangular circuits in winds of around 15 knots, with gusts reaching 20 knots and waves rising to approximately 1.5 metres.

The demanding conditions required precise teamwork, quick tactical decisions and expert boat handling as competitors completed the final races needed to decide the overall standings.

In the Época category, Argyll, skippered by Griff Rhys, secured victory after maintaining its advantage throughout the competition. The historic yacht finished ahead of Gipsy, confirming an impressive performance across the weekend.

Tight battles for the titles

Some of the closest racing came in the Clásicos division, where Argos, helmed by Bárbara Trilling, successfully defended its title. Locked level with Clarionet heading into the final race, Argos produced a decisive performance to edge ahead and retain the championship, while Sea Fever completed the podium.

In the Espíritu de Tradición class, Sea Lion, skippered by Manuel Champalimaud, emerged victorious ahead of Tryglaw and Caroline.

Meanwhile, the RI Clásicos category produced another dramatic finish. Alitan 3, with Jorge Pineda at the helm, claimed the title after overcoming Ardora III in the concluding race, while Kumulus secured third place.

A growing showcase for classic sailing

The Jávea regatta remains the only event dedicated exclusively to classic sailing yachts in the Valencian Community, giving it a unique place in Spain’s sailing calendar. Organisers say its inclusion in the Mare Nostrum series has attracted an even stronger fleet and increased national recognition.

Club Náutico de Jávea president Arturo Miquel said joining the prestigious circuit has helped bring higher-calibre boats to the event while reinforcing Jávea’s reputation as an important destination for classic sailing.

The weekend concluded with a prize-giving ceremony celebrating not only the winners but also the camaraderie shared by owners, crews and spectators. Against the stunning backdrop of Xàbia Bay, the regatta once again demonstrated why these beautifully preserved yachts continue to capture the imagination, combining living maritime history with high-level sporting competition.
