New La Cala Lions president bags €535 from Percy Pig charity bar crawl

Sandra Tavendale, newly installed president of La Cala de Mijas Lions Club, collected more than €500 this week on behalf of the charity fundraising group after a lively afternoon of persuading the generous residents of Mijas to stick their hands in their pockets. The La Cala Lions and their supporters never pause their efforts for local good causes, even in the hottest months.

Percy Pink Pig hits Calahonda bars

Plucky ladies trotted hilariously from bar to bar across Calahonda, collecting cash for a special fun day directed at children with cancer. One afternoon alone produced a strong €535 total. Liz from Bridges Bar presented Julie, owner of Bar 97, with a HAMper after the pair raffled it on site. Inside sat tins of Bacon Grill and Danish bacon, pork scratchings, Percy Pig biscuits, chocolate and sweets. Posts celebrated the pink pig mascot and thanked every donor who helped the Lions help others.

Steady work for young patients and more

Funds will support the club’s planned children with cancer fun day, continuing a long record of practical aid. Founded in January 1998 by Martin Rhead, La Cala de Mijas Lions Club operates as a volunteer chapter of Lions Clubs International. Roughly 30 unpaid members, mostly foreign residents, run charity shops that first opened in 2004 on Calle Torremolinos and stage regular fairs, races, dinners and walkathons. More than €1.5 million has reached families in need, school equipment, animal shelters such as Donkey Dreamland, diabetes and Alzheimer’s groups, mental-health charities and emergency medical schemes including Message in a Bottle kits.

Collaboration with Mijas Town Hall’s foreigners department is as close as ever. In 2025 the club earned the Joan Hunt Solidarity Award for continued community service on the Costa del Sol.
