Tragedy at Jávea beach as 68-year-old swimmer dies despite hour-long rescue attempt

What began as a warm summer afternoon at one of the Costa Blanca’s most popular beaches ended in heartbreak after a 68-year-old swimmer died despite an extensive rescue operation involving lifeguards, police and emergency medical teams.

The tragedy unfolded at La Grava beach in Jávea on Wednesday July 29, where beachgoers watched as rescuers fought for around an hour to save the man’s life after he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest.

Swimmer spotted in difficulty

The incident happened shortly after 3pm on the busy stretch of coastline close to Jávea’s port.

According to reports, Red Cross lifeguards on duty noticed the 68-year-old swimmer was struggling in the water and appeared to be losing strength. Acting quickly, they entered the sea, brought him safely back to shore and immediately assessed his condition.

Moments after reaching the beach, the man suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and lost consciousness, prompting lifeguards to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) without delay while other emergency services were alerted.

Their rapid intervention ensured treatment started within moments, giving the man the best possible chance while additional medical teams travelled to the scene.

Emergency services race to help

A major emergency response followed, with officers from Jávea Local Police and the Guardia Civil joining Red Cross personnel on the beach.

A Basic Life Support ambulance and an advanced SAMU medical unit also attended, allowing paramedics to continue both basic and advanced life support procedures. Medical staff used specialist equipment, including a defibrillator, as they worked tirelessly to restart the man’s heart.

Rescuers continued the life-saving efforts for approximately an hour, with multiple emergency professionals taking part in the operation.

Despite every effort made by lifeguards and medical teams, the man could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released his identity.
