Ascent to the Sanctuary: Record-breaking Novelda race welcomes Spain’s athletics legends

More than 1,000 runners filled the streets of Novelda as the 38th Ascent to the Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene enjoyed its biggest edition yet. The record-breaking event combined elite sporting talent with community spirit, welcoming three of Spain’s greatest athletics champions for a memorable celebration of one of Alicante province’s longest-running races.

Athletics legends inspire record turnout

More than 1,000 runners took to the streets of Novelda as the 38th Ascent to the Sanctuary of Saint Mary Magdalene celebrated its biggest event ever, attracting a record number of competitors and three of Spain’s greatest athletics champions.

The popular race, one of the longest-running events in Alicante province, welcomed former world champions Abel Anton and Martin Fiz, together with Olympic gold medallist Fermin Cacho, who joined the weekend celebrations and shared their passion for sport with runners and spectators.

Although Cacho was unable to compete because of injury, the three athletics legends met participants and spoke about the importance of determination, perseverance and hard work, inspiring competitors of all ages.

The event on 1 August once again brought together athletes, families, volunteers and residents, reinforcing its reputation as one of the Costa Blanca’s most popular community sporting occasions.

Community spirit remains at the heart of the race

The record turnout reflected the growing popularity of the annual race.

In the race itself, Bouchrak El Houcine claimed overall victory, while Cristina Juan was the first female runner across the finish line.

As hundreds of runners crossed the finish line after making the climb to the iconic sanctuary, organisers hailed another successful year for an event that continues to grow while remaining true to its community roots.

Nearly four decades after it began, the race continues to unite generations of runners and supporters, proving that the spirit of community remains at the heart of one of Alicante province’s favourite sporting traditions. Its continued success highlights the enduring appeal of grassroots sport and the important role it plays in bringing people together across the Costa Blanca.
