Costa del Sol towns join nationwide show of support for Ceuta

Spain is preparing for a nationwide show of support for Ceuta on September 2, with people expected to take to the streets under the messages “Ceuta es España. Ceuta es Europa” and “Ceuta no está sola. España está con Ceuta”, or “Ceuta is not alone. Spain is Ceuta.”

The demonstrations coincide with the Day of Ceuta, as the Spanish autonomous city continues dealing with the aftermath of the mass arrivals from Morocco at the end of July. Tens of thousands of people crossed into the city within a short period, placing heavy pressure on accommodation, public services and security.

Madrid has since announced further measures for Ceuta, including a new central command to coordinate the response to the migration crisis.

Fuengirola and Torremolinos back Ceuta

Support will also be visible on the Costa del Sol, with towns including Fuengirola and Torremolinos joining the call for demonstrations, which could lead to traffic complications as the marches are expected to bring huge support.

Fuengirola has announced a gathering on Wednesday, September 2, at 8pm in Plaza de España. A message from the Fuengirola Council said the town wanted to express its affection, closeness and support for the people of Ceuta by joining the Day of Ceuta demonstration.

Torremolinos has also confirmed its support, with a gathering scheduled for 8pm outside the town hall.

For many people taking part, the message will go far beyond the immediate migration crisis, beyond any political parties, and stressing Ceuta’s status as a Spanish city and its position on Europe’s most southern frontier. Ceuta and Melilla form part of Spain, while their borders with Morocco are also external borders of the Schengen area.

A national message of unity and affection

September 2’s demonstrations are expected to give people across Spain an opportunity to show solidarity with Ceuta following an extraordinary few weeks.

For residents on the Costa del Sol wishing to take part, Fuengirola and Torremolinos will provide two local opportunities to join the nationwide message: Ceuta is not alone. For those who do not wish to take part, be careful with the extra traffic delays that are expected.
