The Balearic Islands have strengthened their position as Spain’s leading holiday destination after welcoming almost 6.6 million international visitors during the first six months of 2026, with Mallorca continuing to attract the largest share of overseas tourists.

New figures released by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that between January and June, the archipelago received 6,594,822 foreign visitors, representing a 2.5 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025. The figures underline the islands’ enduring appeal despite growing discussions about managing tourism sustainably.

Mallorca leads the way

June alone saw more than 2.27 million international tourists arrive in the Balearics, accounting for almost a quarter of all foreign visitors to Spain during the month. That made the islands the country’s most popular destination for overseas travellers at the start of the peak summer season.

Mallorca remained the undisputed favourite, welcoming around 1.59 million international visitors during June. Ibiza and Formentera attracted approximately 561,000 tourists, while Menorca received more than 123,000.

The figures highlight the continuing popularity of the Balearics with travellers seeking beaches, culture, gastronomy and outdoor experiences, while also reflecting the islands’ broad appeal across different types of holidays.

Visitors are spending more

The latest data also points to a healthy increase in tourism spending.

International visitors spent an estimated €2.726 billion across the Balearics during June, representing a rise of 5.7 per cent compared with the same month last year. That suggests holidaymakers are contributing more to the local economy, supporting hotels, restaurants, shops, transport providers and thousands of small businesses throughout the islands.

Higher visitor spending is widely viewed as a positive indicator because it can generate greater economic benefits without requiring dramatic increases in visitor numbers.

A changing tourism picture

While visitor numbers continue to grow, many within the Balearic tourism industry believe the focus is gradually shifting away from chasing record-breaking arrivals towards improving the overall quality and sustainability of tourism.

Industry representatives have increasingly spoken about creating a more balanced tourism model that delivers stronger economic returns while helping to protect the islands’ environment, infrastructure and quality of life for residents.

Rather than measuring success solely by how many people visit, there is growing emphasis on attracting visitors throughout more months of the year, encouraging longer stays and supporting businesses beyond the traditional summer season.

Key markets remain strong

The Balearics continue to benefit from strong demand across Europe’s major travel markets, particularly from the United Kingdom and Germany, which remain among the islands’ most important sources of visitors.

Excellent air connections, an established tourism sector and the islands’ reputation for reliable sunshine continue to make Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera some of Europe’s most sought-after holiday destinations.

For many businesses, the latest figures provide welcome reassurance that international demand remains resilient despite wider economic uncertainty across Europe.

Looking ahead

With July and August traditionally representing the busiest months of the year, the Balearics are expected to welcome millions more visitors before the end of the summer season.

The challenge for the islands will be maintaining their popularity while continuing efforts to improve sustainability, spread tourism more evenly across the year and ensure local communities also benefit from the sector’s success.

For now, the latest figures reinforce Mallorca’s position at the heart of Mediterranean tourism, with the island once again proving to be Spain’s number one destination for international visitors as another busy summer unfolds.
